This is a collaboration of two NYC players that have a long history in the creative music community of New York. A guitarist, improvisor and composer, Adam Caine plays primarily jazz and experimental music but has a background in diverse styles from blues to metal to electronic music. Adam fronts the Adam Caine Trio with Tom Blancarte and John Wagner and plays in Eric Eigner's Mysterium and Josh Myer's Big Words.

Adam grew up in Rochester, New York and studied music at the University of Rochester. Since 2000 he has lived in Brooklyn, New York and has played in New York City and throughout the United States. Adam has performed with Connie Crothers, Paul Smoker, Daniel Carter, Ken Filiano, Phil Haynes, Glen Branca, Haale, and the New York Soundpainting Ensemble.

Adam's trio CD's "Thousandfold" (NoBusiness Records, 2009) and "Pipe" (TrueFalse, 2005) received rave reviews in the Wire, Cadence, and All About Jazz. In 2008, Adam was awarded a grant from the Brooklyn Arts council for an improvised performance with visual artist Marjan Moghaddam. As a composer for video art, Adam's music has been featured in over 20 international festivals since 2006.

Federico Ughi is a drummer and composer based in New York.

Federico Ughi's music infuses the New York avant garde sound with a sense of melody inspired by the Italian classical and folk traditions of his childhood in Rome. Ornette Coleman has been a major influence for Federico as well as a mentor.

Born in Rome, Italy Federico relocated to London at age 21 to play music, from there moving to New York in 2000 again to play music. He has been based in Brooklyn, NY ever since.

He has performed or recorded with Daniel Carter, William Parker, Darius Jones, The Cinematic Orchestra among others. Federico Ughi has perfomed throughout Italy, the UK, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Slovenia, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Canada and the US.

"Ughi seems less concerned with the usual strategies of Free Jazz, although much of what he writes falls in that genre, than with the integration of improvisation and composition in a seamless unit that meshes melodic abstraction with sophisticated writing." All Music

Grand Rapids Social Diary sent me a person to do an interview a few weeks ago. It was supposed to come out on September and I was getting edgy wondering when the thing
would actually appear on the electronic page, I checked it everyday like a damn
fool. I was fed up and curious to see what the writer had come up with. I called him
and wrote the editor but nothing, then something came in my e-mail box, it was him
telling me his computer was having trouble. It sounded fishy, so I went on facebook
on the notes part and wrote my own damn interview, here it is with pictures by
Tim Motley.

Lac La Belle is an intriguing trio that juxtaposes rural American music of the early-to-mid 20th century with their contemporary Rustbelt aesthetic. The result is a tradition re-imagined, or maybe just resumed. Lac La Belle began with its members learning an extensive repertoire of old-timey country and folk songs before developing its own material, but soon they pared down to some personal favorites as more and more original music was written. The songs were honed during two sizable tours in 2009 and this creative flurry culminated in its first eponymous recording, released in November of that year. Recorded by Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, Detroit Cobras, The Dirt Bombs etc), the entire record was cut live in the studio, using only a few microphones. Its spare production captures the timeless quality of Lac La Belle’s sound.

Jennie Knaggs moved to Detroit in 2004 and her singular talent has made her a fixture on the city's music scene. She is the 2000 Hollerin' Champion of Wise Co., Virginia and Letcher Co., Kentucky. In the course of travel and advocacy work in Appalachia, she learned folk music from local musicians. Her snapping rhythm guitar, mandolin and accordion playing are all in fine display with Lac La Belle. Knaggs has also studied opera and toured the Ukraine and Europe in various vocal ensembles. She currently performs in the rock group I, Crime, Odu Afrobeat Orchestra and as a soloist. Nick Schillace is internationally recognized as a solo instrumentalist who has contributed significantly to the American Primitive guitar canon with his releases Box Canyon (2005) and Landscape and People (2008.) Raised by folk and blues enthusiasts, he acquired early training at Augusta Heritage in Elkins, West Virginia. Schillace draws on this background as he sings and plays banjo, mandolin and resophonic guitar in Lac La Belle. Other recent work includes tenor guitar in Odu Afrobeat Orchestra, electric guitar in Indoorpark (with percussionist Jon Moshier) and acoustic strings in the experimental/traditional group Duo un Duo with Joel Peterson. Schillace has toured and performed with other finger picking greats, including Jack Rose, Keenan Lawler, Eric Carbonara and Glenn Jones. Multi-instrumentalist Joel Peterson has spent 15 years performing in some of Detroit's most noted groups, including: Immigrant Suns, Scavenger Quartet (with Frank Pahl), Kindred (with Faruq Z. Bey), Odu Afrobeat Orchestra, Xenharmonic Gamelan, BoxDeserter (with Thollem McDonas and Skeeter Shelton); he has also collaborated and performed with Rhys Chatham, Damo Suzuki, Amy Denio, Gino Robair, Luc Houtkamp, Tatsuya Nakatani and many others. A one woman comedy about the depths of shallowness. Come meet Courtney. She’s not a bad person, she’s just painfully familiar. Follow Courtney from Spanish class, to beer pong, to reality television audition tapes as she typifies an all too familiar American culture.
"You Know This Girl," is a light comedy and an intense social satire. Don't be alarmed by the seriousness of the description, it is good dirty fun at the expense of those girls who have gone wild and the bros who have boners for them. It has been described by audiences as a "hilarious," "shocking," "outrageous, beautiful abomination."
WARNING: The language and content of this show is vulgar and offensive. There is partial nudity as well. If you'll be seriously offended, please skip it. The author prefers to shock and awe audiences with her wit and brilliance as opposed to dirty words and boobies.

Adam Rudolph’s and Ralph Jones first performed together in 1974 at the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival. They have collaborated together in numerous projects including their collective quartet Eternal Wind (1980 – 1990) Kenne Cox’s Guerrilla Jam Band, De Candombe, Wadada Leo Smith, and Adam Rudolph’s Moving Pictures. In 1988 they began their association with Yusef Lateef with whom they have performed and recorded in Trio Quartet, Octet and as featured soloists in Dr. Lateefs “The African American Epic Suite” with the Koln, Atlanta, and Detroit Symphony Orchestras.
Their music is grounded in the American improvisational tradition while embracing music forms, languages, instrumentation, and cosmologies of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the African Diaspora. Decades of performance and research into these music cultures have given the artists the background and experience to create a unique and unprecedented improvisational art form. Since 1991 they performed at many concert venues in both Europe and the United States, including Verona, Istanbul and Tampere festivals. Their concert repertoire consists of original compositions by Mr. Rudolph that serve as a basis for improvisational dialogue.

About Yeyi:
Yeyi is Mbuti yodeling - a wordless offering in thanks to the forest for …..Compositional forms serve as thematic material to provide an orchestrated context for improvisational dialogue. Music materials consist, among other things, of original melodies, textural gestures, sound languages, tone rows, traditional and synthetic scales, diadic and intervallicaly generated harmonies, call and response, polyphony, dynamics, and the coloration of silences.
Unique forms are generated through the concept of “Cyclic Verticalism”, whereby polyrhythms, as used in African music, are combined with rhythm cycles, as used in Indian music. When combined with the above-described tonal materials, larger forms can be generated. In the compositions these materials are utilized to serve emotional coloration; what in India is called Rasa. Performers are given the freedom to use their imagination and listening ability to develop the compositions within their own individual motion and timing, while still relating to the overall form and to the aesthetic and musical functions. The concept is to generate unusual relationships of sound against sound, form against form, and rhythm against rhythm in a non-linear, ever shifting kaleidoscope of music images.

BIOGRAPHIES:

Born in 1955, handrummer, percussionist, composer, multi instrumentalist and improviser ADAM RUDOLPH has been hailed as “a pioneer in world music” by the NY times. Currently he composes for his groups Adam Rudolph’s Moving Pictures quartet and octet, Hu: Vibrational trio, and Go: Organic Orchestra, a 15 – 50 piece ensemble for which he has developed an original music notation and conducting system. He has taught and conducted hundreds of musicians in the Go: Organic Orchestra concept in both North America and Europe. Rudolph recently premiered his opera The Dreamer, based on the text of Friedreich Nietzsche's "The Birth of Tragedy". Rudolph has recently had his rhythm repository and methodology book, Pure Rhythm published by Advance Music, Germany. He has performed at festivals and concerts throughout North & South America, Europe, Africa, and Japan, appeared on numerous albums and released over twenty recordings as a leader.
Over the past 25 years Rudolph has developed a unique syncretic approach to hand drumming in creative collaborations with outstanding artists of cross-cultural and improvised music, including Jon Hassel, L. Shankar, Joseph Bowie, Fred Anderson, Hassan Hakmoun and Wadada Leo Smith among others. He has released over a dozen recordings on his own Meta Records label documenting his compositions for various size ensembles as well as his collaborations with artists such as Sam Rivers, Omar Sosa, and Pharaoh Sanders.
In 1988 Rudolph began his association with Yusef Lateef, with whom he has recorded over 15 albums including several of their large ensemble collaborations. Rudolph still performs worldwide with Dr. Lateef in ensembles ranging from their acclaimed duo concerts to appearances as guest soloist with the Koln, Atlanta and Detroit symphony orchestras. He has been on the faculty of Esalen Institute, California Institute of the Arts and the Danish Jazz Federation Summer Institute. Rudolph has received grants and compositional commissions from the Rockefeller Foundation, Chamber Music America, Meet the Composer, Mary Flagler Cary Trust, the NEA, Arts International, Durfee Foundation and American Composers Forum.

RALPH M. JONES has been active as a performing artist in the African-American Improvisational tradition for over 30 years. As an internationally recognized performing artist, he has recorded and performed throughout the U.S., Europe, Africa and Asia with Dr. Yusef Lateef, Pharaoh Sanders, AhmedAbdul Malik, Ella Fitzgerald, Wadada Leo Smith, Ken Cox the MC5, Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures, Go: Organic Orchestra and his group, The Seekers of Truth Revolutionary Ensemble( SOTRE). Ralph has been a featured soloist with the WDR Radio Orchestra of Koln, Germany, and the Atlanta and Detroit Symphonies in the premiers and performances of Dr. Lateef's "African American Epic Suite" for quintet and orchestra. He is also a founding member of the internationally acclaimed world music ensemble, Eternal Wind. Ralph has recently composed original music for the award-winning documentary film, "Tell Me, Cuba" and provided original music for a new production of the critically acclaimed play "Death of a Salesman" featuring Avery Brooks. His most CD recent release is "Yusef Lateef & Ralph M. Jones III: Woodwinds" on YAL records.

He has earned his Masters degree in African- American Studies and his B.A. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA, where he also studied the hichiriki with Japanese Gagaku master Togi. As an educator, he is in his 16th year on the music faculty of the California State Summer School for the Arts and is presently Faculty in Residence at Oberlin College's Afrika Heritage House.

Hugo Claudin
Hugo Claudín is a Mexican-American painter of contemporary figuration. He was born in Guadalajara Mexico in 1966. As a teenager he migrated to the United States where he studied art at Kendall College of Art & Design. In addition to being a painter, he is a drummer/percussionist and co-founder of the latin band Cabildo. He collaborates extensively with local artists and musicans. Included are works from this current series of paintings titled Mexicains Sans Frontieres which is also the name of his studio at 120 South Division or Avenue of the Arts. Mexicains Sans Frontieres (Mexicanos sin Fronteras or Mexicans without Borders) "deals with my binational status and the secret lives of undocumented immigrants from Mexico. and the difficulty of crossing borders, -cultural and geo-political, as well as language barriers. Hugo uses the Mexican wrestler mask as a metaphor for the unseen communities of undocumented people living in the US that go uncounted and misrepresnted in the media. He gives them a dignity and cultural richness that is often overlooked. He uses bright colors he experienced on sabbatical in the artist community of Todos Santos in Baja California Sur that he visited in 2004.
